Interview: Tigers Central

Detroit Sports Squad asked DTC editor in cheif Ryan Sosin a few questions. Here they are:

1. Looking at the projected line up what would you think the Tigers would finish in the A.L central?

The Tigers will be more competitive in the A.L. Central this season, but still have some questions to answer before anyone can say how high up they will finish. Things like where Higginson and White fit into the line-up, how many games will we see the bad Jason Johnson and just how happy is Urbina going to be in the closer position.

2. Who will be the break out player in 2005 for the Tigers?

Look at Craig Monroe. He’s got a good power stroke and can hit at the big league level. He’ll platoon in left field and if he gets enough at bats, could really break out.

3. Was 2004 a fluke for Carlos Guillen?

I Don’t think so. He has found a comfortable place with Detroit and the management loves him for it. In Seattle, he was in a bit of turmoil for a team that didn’t appreciate him. If he’s healthy, expect more of the same.

4. Of all the prospects, who's more likely to succeed in a Tiger uniform?

Curtis Granderson is an impressive player. He isn’t a superstar in any one area, but all five of his tools are solid.

Thanks for coming.

I see the Tigers fighting with the White Sox for 3rd in the Central. But if Millwood returns to form and Cleveland's young hitters continue to blossom, the AL Central could suddenly become a very tough place to play.

Detroit's young pitchers need to continue to improve steadily for the Tigers to keep pace. Even so, I don't think anybody is going to displace the Twinks this year.

I've always thought the Twins were over rated. I might be a little optimistic, but I think looking at the line ups, the Tigers could easily make a push for AL central title. Whats so good about the Twins?

Oh, the Twins ARE largely overrated. They haven't won the Central these last few years because they were good, but rather they won because the Central was weak. But for the next few years, the Twins have Santana, Nathan, Mourneau, and Mauer, and those guys are so good that you CAN'T overrate them. Extremely, extremely talented.

Other than that, I don't really like the Twins. Hunter is wildly overrated, and ditto for Jones. Stewart is good, but injury prone. Their rotation is suspect. And their middle infield is one giant question mark.

See, the thing that worries me about Ordonez is that he was NEVER a huuuge power hit. He was a good pure hitter with pretty good pop. And that was in Chicago, which was a good hitters' park. Now he moves to Comerica, which is a big, spacious pitchers' park, and which should lower his power numbers even further. Meaning that even if Mags is healthy, no way he can justify that massive contract he got.
